Gadget is a graduation film for students of the MA Filmmaking course at Goldsmiths College, London. The story came from a shared curiosity of the role of smart technology's place in society. Inspired by Jaron Lanier's landmark text You Are Not A Gadget we began exploring ideas of technological dependency and a devaluing of what it means to be human.
Smart-phone technology has already changed our lives, and AR and VR technology’s advent into mainstream life is just around the corner: it’s barely the future anymore. Gadget asks how living in the “virtual” rather than the “real” world may affect who we are. We want to ask if our immersion in technology is a sign of a society pushing the boundaries of what it means to be human, or if it signals our increasing isolation from each other and the erosion of empathy?
